The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DOE) is a youth awards program founded in the United Kingdom in 1956 by Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, that has since expanded to 144 nations. The DOE program aims to encourage personal development and social involvement among young people. It is a non-competitive program that encourages young people to set and achieve personal goals.
Award Levels
The DOE program has three levels: Bronze, Silver, and Gold. Each level requires increasing commitment and effort. Participants must complete activities in four sections: Volunteering, Physical, Skill, and Adventurous Journey. Gold level participants must also complete a Residential Project.
Award Sections
The DOE program has four main sections:
- Volunteering: Undertaking service to individuals or the community.
- Physical: Improving in an area of sport, dance or fitness activities.
- Skill: Developing practical and social skills and personal interests.
- Adventurous Journey: Planning, training for, and completion of an adventurous journey in the UK or abroad.
Gold level participants must also complete a Residential Project, which involves working away from home on a worthwhile project.
